Authorities investigating car thefts

Davis County motorists are being urged to pull their keys and lock their vehicles following reports of three cars being stolen in a three-day period.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a theft of a Chevrolet Corvette, which was later recovered after it had been burned beyond repair.

The Bloomfield Police Department received reports of two vehicles being stolen Monday from the parking lot used by City of Bloomfield employees.

Both of those vehicles were recovered but authorities are still seeking suspects in all three car thefts.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to contact the Davis County Sheriff’s Office or the Bloomfield Police Department by calling 664-2700.

School board approves compensation increases

The Davis County Community School Board approved collective bargaining agreements with the unions representing both the certified and classified staff.

The board approved overall compensation package increases of 3.75 percent for both union contracts over the next school year. The board also approved 3.75 compensation package increases for all non-union employees with the exception of superintendent Dan Maeder.

In other action, the board approved a contract for Joe Rasmussen as the new high school head football coach.

Hospital board discussed health care needs assessment

The Davis County Hospital Board of Trustees Monday night moved to begin taking action on three of the top priorities established in its recent Community Healthcare Needs Assessment Town Hall Meeting.

A committee of community members and healthcare personnel will be making decisions on how to continue to build healthcare collaborative efforts between the city, county, school, and hospital; fighting obesity through the use of fitness and healthy foods; and providing wellness education on heart disease.

The board adopted the 2014 strategic objectives for the hospital and approved the 2014 capital and operating budgets. Patient revenues are estimated to be over $21 million for the next fiscal year. Expenses for the year are estimated to be over $21 million and the board is facing a projected loss in its operating margin of $600,819. With other income, the hospital anticipates a net profit of $525.735.

Burglaries reported

The Bloomfield Police Department is investigating a rash of vehicle burglaries that have taken place in the past few days.

Officer Zach Dunlavy said several people have reported burglaries where thieves have broken into vehicles looking for money and other small items.

So far, Brent Burton and Steve Park on East Franklin Street have reported thefts. Several others on East Street in including Charlie Thompson, Chris Griffin, Darlene Garrett, and Darrin Garrett have also reported burglaries to their vehicles.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is encouraged to contact the police department at 664-2700 with any information you might have that would lead to the arrest and conviction of suspects in the cases.

Schoolboard to meet Monday night

The Davis County Community School board will meet Monday night at 7 p.m.

The board will consider approval of contracts of all certified, classified and coaching contracts for the coming school year. The board will also consider an insurance package, a progress report, a wash bay lease agreement, lunch inventory and bids, and will consider wage and salary increases for non-union employees.

Hospital board to meet Monday

The Davis County Hospital Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday night.

The board will hear reports from management, administrative and departmental staff managers.

The board will take action on a new policy review and a revised policy statement review. The board will also consider a review of the departmental policies and plans. The board will consider credential requests, financial reports, and adoption of a CHNA plan and strategic goals for 2014.

Esther L. Van Horn

Esther Louise Van Horn, 84, of Bloomfield died June 16, 2013, at the Bloomfield Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 2013, at the Bloomfield Christian Church with Pastor Jack Knox officiating.  Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. 

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday with the family present to greet friends from 2-4 p.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield.  A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield Christian Church.

Lois Ramseyer

Lois Kathryn Ramseyer, 88, of Bloomfield died June 16, 2013, at the Bloomfield Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Pulaski Mennonite Church with Pastor Darrell Zook officiating.  Burial will be at the Pulaski Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Pulaski Mennonite Church Building Fund.

Lady Mustangs lose to Clarke Monday night

The Lady Mustang softball team suffered a 12-1 loss to Clarke Monday night in South Central Conference action.

The Lady Mustangs travel to Keokuk for a non-conference game Tuesday night. Action begins at 5:30 p.m. with the junior varsity game. The varsity game will follow.

Mustang lose two to Albia Monday night

The Mustang baseball team lost a pair of games to Albia Monday night in South Central Conference action. Albia won the opener 6-5 after using a bunt squeeze play in the bottom of the seventh inning to get the winning run across the plate. Albia won the second game 13-2.

Davis County finds a break in its schedule and won’t play again until Thursday when they host Chariton in a varsity doubleheader.
