Memorial Day service set

The Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the IOOF Cemetery Monday, May 27. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

A short parade will precede the ceremony at 10:50 a.m. Members of the American Legion and the Davis County High School Marching Band will march from the hospital to the IOOF Cemetery podium located on North Madison Street in Bloomfield.

Following the parade, the band will play a few selections as part of the ceremony. Guest speaker Todd Saffell of Bloomfield will be featured during the ceremony. Saffell is a current member of the

U. S. Military and recently returned from tours of duty overseas.

Supervisors to meet Tuesday

The Davis County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday, May 28 instead of Monday due to the Memorial Day holiday.

The agenda calls for a public hearing to discuss closing roads at 9 a.m. The board will consider the first reading of a utility ordinance at 9:10 a.m.

The board will meet with Sean Strachan at 10 a.m. regarding the dog breed ordinance the county has in place. The board will also meet with Robin Benge in regard to Floris Flag Day.

Council approves budget amendment

The Bloomfield City Council approved a budget amendment for the 2013 fiscal year.

The council held a public hearing to discuss the amendment but received no comments or questions about the matter.

The council also approved a resolution calling for an extension of a loan at the Success Bank in connection with the Bloomfield Main Street’s Downtown Faade Master Plan Project.

Senior center to be closed for Memorial Day holiday

The Bloomfield Senior Citizens Center will be closed Monday due to the Memorial Day holiday. No meals will be served and there will be no bus service.

Renovation postponement is top story

The Davis County Hospital Board this week verbally agreed to put a proposed renovation project on hold for at least a year.

CEO Deb Herzberg made the suggestion Monday night saying the hospital may want to wait at least a year before the do anything. Herzberg cited the 2014 fiscal year budget and hospital finances, as the reason the board should consider postponing the project.

Wednesday’s Bloomfield Democrat features a story about the hospital board and the discussion about the postponing of the project.

City Council to meet Thursday night

The Bloomfield City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday night.

The council will host a public hearing to discuss a budget amendment for the 2013 fiscal-year budget.

The council will consider a resolution to amend the budget and will also consider the approval of an amendment to authorize the extension of a loan at the Success Bank in conjunction with Bloomfield Main Street for the Downtown Faade Master Plan Project.

Last day of school is Friday

Friday is the final day of school in the Davis County Community School District for the 2012-2013 school year.

Students and staff will be off until August when the 2013-2014 school district begins following the Iowa State Fair.

Bloomfield Main Street honored

Bloomfield Main Street was honored recently at the annual Main Street Iowa Awards in Des Moines.

Bloomfield Main Street was presented the award for the Best Faade Improvement over $15,000. The award was presented for the renovation of the Davis County Courthouse clock tower renovation.

Don Walton of Bloomfield was also recognized as the Bloomfield Main Street’s Volunteer of the Year.

Robert "Bob" Culp

Robert “Bob” Culp, 71, of What Cheer died Friday, May 17, 2013, at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

A memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer.

Visitation with the family will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and last until the time of service. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial contributions be made to Hospice.

Softball team to compete in Centerville Tournament Saturday

The Lady Mustang softball team will be in action Saturday at the Centerville Tournament. Action begins at 10 a.m. and the Lady Mustangs are slated to play three games in the tournament.

Mustangs split with Fort Madison

The Mustang baseball team split a doubleheader with Fort Madison Thursday night. Fort Madison won the opening game 6-1 before the Mustangs scored a 6-3 victory in the second game.

The Mustang baseball team will host the Davis County Classic Tournament Saturday at the Fairgrounds Field. Action begins at 10 a.m. Saturday morning with a game between Fairfield and Davis County. The second game will begin at noon and will feature a game between Van Buren and Keokuk.

A consolation game will begin at 2 p.m. followed by the championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
