Snyder shows grand champion steer

Madison Snyder showed the grand champion steer in the beef show at the fair last Friday morning. Cami Schutter showed the grand champion market lamb. Madison Stephenson showed the grand champion dairy cow. Kaitlynn Larrington showed the rabbit that won best in show. Eleanor Boas exhibited the grand champion poultry.

Corby Wuthrich and Matt Smith both won top honors in the goat show while Mercedes Northup showed the grand champion market hog.

Members of the fair board said Sunday they were extremely pleased with how the fair went last week and praised the excellent weather for helping to bring record crowds of people to the event.

School board to meet

The Davis County School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday night.

The board will meet in closed session based on Iowa Code Chapter 21.9.

At 7 p.m. the board will come into open session.

The board will consider reappointing Betsy Bassett as the board secretary, a Title I reading purchase, an online payment system, a remote monitoring and maintenance service contract, a rental agreement with the Davis County Daycare, an agreement with the Mutchler Community Center and more.

Mitchell shows top horse at the fair

Seth Mitchell won top honors in the 4-H horse show Thursday at the fair. Mitchell showed the grand champion horse. Others who won awards were Grace Fleming, reserve horse; Brady Fenton, mule; Hallie Pearson, grand pony and Jaycee Townsend, reserve pony.

Cami Schutter showed the grand champion lamb in the sheep show Thursday. Trevor Koellner showed the reserve champion lamb and the grand champion pen of two. Carter Batterson showed the reserve champion pen of two lambs.


Friday’s schedule finds the dairy cattle and beef show, which began at 8 a.m. The rabbit show began at 9:30 a.m. The poultry show begins at 12:30 p.m. and the goat show begins at 4 p.m.

Friday night’s grandstand entertainment will be the free concerts of Morgan Frazier and James Carothers. Those shows begin at 8:30 p.m.

Morgan Frazier will giving a free half-hour presentation on bullying in the grandstand at 7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome to attend.


Saturday’s activities include the baby contest at 9 a.m., kids’ games and tractor pulls at 10 a.m., turtle races at 11 a.m. and old west game at 2 p.m. in the pavilion.

The 4-H swine show begins at 8 a.m. Saturday morning followed by pet shows at 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.


Sunday’s activities include the Bill Riley Talent search at 2 p.m., and the “new” demolition derby at 7 p.m.

Supervisors to meet Monday

The Davis County Board of Supervisors will meet at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The board will sign contract with Iowa Bridge and Culvert for the Boatman Bridge at 9 a.m.

The board will consider a resolution for support of Area XV Regional Planning at 10 a.m. and discuss the treasurer’s semi-annual report at 10:20 a.m. The board will host an open forum with Waste Management at 10:40 a.m.

Charles Leroy Hunt

Charles Leroy “Roy” Hunt, 97, of Bloomfield, Iowa died July 20, 2014 at the Bloomfield Care Center. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Jack Knox officiating.  Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. 

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Bloomfield Christian Church.  Online condolences may be directed to

Warren Wayne Clark

Warren Wayne Clark, 55, of 12355 Mink Blvd., died at 11:49 a.m. July 19, 2014 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Smith officiating.  Burial will be in Deuser Cemetery near Farson.

Visitation begins after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Babe Ruth team finishes third

The Davis County Babe Ruth 14U Tournament team finished third in the Iowa State Babe Ruth Tournament held over the weekend in Ottumwa. Davis County lost an 8-4 game to Tri-County North in the final loser’s bracket game Sunday afternoon.

Mustangs lose to Albia

The Mustang baseball team’s season came to an end Saturday night in the Class 2A District 13 Championship game. Albia defeated the Mustangs 6-0.

Albia took the lead in the first inning with a two-run home run and scored four runs in the final two innings to get the win.

Matthew Hopkins had the Mustangs’ only hit in the game.

Davis County finished the season with a record of 15-18.
