Meet the Mustangs is Thursday night

Bloomfield Main Streets Meet the Mustangs night will be held Thursday night in the Davis County Courtyard. Food and vendors will be on the square at 5:30 p.m. Childrens games will be held from 5-8 p.m. in the northwest corner of the courtyard. At 6:15 p.m. new school staff will be introduced, followed by the introduction of all band, choir, and athletic students participating in fall actives and fall sports. The cheerleaders and bands will also perform during the evening.

School Improvement Committee to host meeting Thursday

The Davis County School Improvement Committee will host a meeting following Meet the Mustangs Thursday night. The meeting will be held in the Davis County Courtroom and will allow the public to ask questions and learn more about the proposed bond issue.

Supervisors to meet Monday

The Davis County Board of Supervisors will meet at 8:30 a.m. Monday. the board will meet wit the courthouse security committee at 8:30 a.m. and with custodian Russell Lundstrum at 8:50 a.m. At 9 a.m. the board will meet with secondary roads, Don Tharp and will later discuss updating a regional 28E agreement.

Absentee voting for school election has begun

 Absentee voting is now open for the Davis County School Board election on Sept 8. Up for re-election this year are Nancy Hougland in director district 2, Doug Dixon in director district 5, and Ken Wuthrich in director district 6. Wuthrich will face competition from Jim Kuberski. Voters will also determine whether or not the school district should issue general obligation bonds in the amount of $9.6 million for facility improvements. Absentee voting will be open through Sept. 7.

Library offers E-books

The Bloomfield Public Library is now participating in BRIDGES, Iowas E-Library offering E-books and audio books available to download for free anytime and from any location. Free with the users library card, patrons can download digital media by visiting bridges.lib.overdrive.com. This system replaces WILBOR, which was previously used for this service. The local library has access to more than 16,000 E-books and 7,500 audio books. For more information about downloading books through this service contact the Bloomfield Public Library for more information.

Council approves bid for water tower

The Bloomfield City Council approved a bid of $736,000 to build a new water tower. Caldwell Tanks of Louisville, Kentucky will begin erecting the new water tower next spring. In other action, the council approved the purchase of a generator for the water control building, which is part of the Rathbun project. The agreed to close one block of Locust Street near the Bloomfield Christian church for a church activity and discussed street problems with Mike McClurg. The council agreed to work on a problem where concrete has expanded in the summer heat near McClurgs residence.

Officers to participate in sTEP program

The Davis County Sheriffs Department and the Bloomfield Police Department will both take part in the sTEP program over the Labor Day holiday. The Davis County Sherif’s Department began its enforcement last Friday while police officers will step up their enforcement Tuesday. The pgoram ends on Sept. 7. Officers will be stepping up enforcement of drunk driving violations, seatbelt violations and more.

Ernst to host office hours in Bloomfield Tuesday

A member of Senator Joni Ernsts staff will be in Bloomfield Tuesday for traveling office hours. Those wishing to visits with her staff may do so at the Bloomfield Public Library from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Her office can help with problems or questions about eligibility involving issues like Social Security, Medicare, Veterans benefits, military affairs, passports, immigration issues, and other federal programs.

Cattle producers honored at state fair

Several Davis County cattle and dairy producers earned several awards at the Iowa State Fair earlier this month. Some of those local producers include the Dave and Becky Henderson family, the Brian Knapp family, Roscoe Valley Farms, Woodruff Angus Farms of Milton and Jo-Ed Holsteins of West Grove. Local auctioneer Phil Schooley was also honored by the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show for serving 20 years as the auctioneer for the sale following the show.

Firefighters receive grain bin rescue training

Bloomfield Firefighters recently underwent training with new grain bin rescue equipment. The department learned techniques that will safely extract someone from being trapped. Wednesdays Bloomfield Democrat features a story about that important training. Other top stories include a story about how the outcome of the upcoming bond issue could affect the ability of the community to receive $3 million in grant funding. Shelly Bassett and Becky Eaton of Davis County spent a week cleaning up the Wapsipinicon River in northeast Iowa and were participants in Project AWARE. In sports, the annual fall sports preview appears in this weeks edition.

Carol Blackwell

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, for Carol Blackwell, who died Aug. 25. The outdoor service will be held at her home at 26372 240th St., Bloomfield. Memorials may be sent to the family who will donate the money in Carols name at a later date.

Dennis Birchmier

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Wagler Funeral Home for Dennis Birchmier, who died Aug. 26. Burial with military rites will be at the Troy Cemetery. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Monday with a Christian Wake Service at 6 p.m. following by visitation until 8 p.m. Memorials have been established to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and Hospice of Wapello and Davis Counties.

A celebration of life for Billie Jean Dewes will be from 4-6 p.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home. The body has been cremated and no services are planned. Memorials have been established to Friends of the Bloomfield Public Library and Good Samaritan Hospice.

Funeral services for Evelyn Irene Johnson will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with the family present at 10 a.m. to greet friends until the time of the funeral. A memorial has been established to the Christian Church.

The Mustang football team opens its 2015 season Friday night against Fairfield in non-district action. Davis County travels to Fairfield for the games, which begin at 5 p.m. with the freshman game and 7:30 p.m. for the varsity game.
