County and state emergency services personnel responded to an accident involving an overturned anhydrous tank South of Drakesville last week. Wednesdays Bloomfield Democrat features a story about the spill, how it happened and the work it took to clean it up. In sports, Kate Birchmier won the Class 2A shot put again last week and also set a new record with her toss of 43-9 in the state meet.
State prohibits public exhibits of poultry and fowl
The Iowa Department of Agriculture this week announced that live bird exhibitions will be prohibited at county fairs across Iowa and the Iowa State Fair during the summer of 2015. The order also prohibits live birds from being sold at livestock auction markets, swap meets and exotic sales. The decision was made in response to the avian flue epidemic that has surfaced in Iowa.
The American Legion Reed-Whisler Post #70 will sponsor a Memorial Day Ceremony at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield Monday, May 25. The Legions color guard will march from the Davis County Hospital to the cemetery podium at 10:30 a.m. The DCHS Band will march to the site as well. Jim Carlisle will deliver the address.
The Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion honored several students last week with scholarships. Tristan Owen, Allison Hulsizer, Allison Gooden, Madison Snyder, Olivia McDougall, Oleeta Morrison, Erin Oswalt Mac Chilton, Seth Mitchell and Kyle Bales each received a scholarship this year. A total of $5,000 was dispersed between the students. In the past four years, the local American Legion has distributed $13,000 in scholarship funds to local seniors.
Esther S. Rinkenberger, 96, of Peoria, Ill. and former resident of Bloomfield, died May 27 at the Apostolic Christian Skylines Home in Peoria. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bloomfield Apostolic Christian Church with church ministers officiating. Burial will be at the Pulaski Cemetery. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the family present from 5-7 p.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home. A memorial has been established to the Apostolic Skylines Home, 7023 NE Skyline Dr., Peoria, IL 61614.
Edna Ione Leyda, 86, of rural Bloomfield passed away May 25 at the Bloomfield Care Center. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, at the Wagler Funeral Home with Rev. Donna Olinger officiating. Cremation will follow the service with burial of the cremains at the IOOF Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday with the family present to greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A memorial has been established in her name to the DC Dollars for Scholars.
The Davis County baseball and softball teams will both host Clarke Wednesday night. The Lady Mustangs will begin at 5 p.m. with a freshman game. The junior varsity and varsity games will follow.
