Davidson sworn in as deputy

Jacob Davidson has been sworn in as a deputy in the Davis County Sheriff's department. Davidson is a Davis County native and graduated with a degree in criminology and psychology from William Penn University in 2016. Davidson had a goal of returning home to serve and protect the people of Davis County.

H.O.P.E. rehabs Miller home

Many volunteers gathered last week to rehabilitate the home of Kersty Miller of Bloomfield. Miller's husband, Josh, passed away after battling cancer, and the H.O.P.E. organization recruited many individuals and businesses to provide materials and labor to help Miller and her five children in the weeklong rehab effort. "It was truly a blessing," Miller said. "Our community is absolutely amazing." See the entire story in this week's Bloomfield Democrat.


Crop conditions grim

Crop conditions are looking pretty grim right now in Davis County. Precipitation totals from Jan. 1 through June 30 show that Davis County has received a total of 9.3 inches. Corn plans are beginning to tassel and fire at the same time. Pastures are burnt up and some farmers are already feeding ad due to lack of feed from other sources. Some farmers have already expressed a need to begin chopping corn to feed livestock.

Mustang Stadium progress reported to school board

The Davis County School Board learned Monday night that construction at  Mustang Stadium is about a week behind schedule. During an update, the board learned that drainage installation is complete and that electric conduit has been installed for needed areas. Top soil and finish grading will be complete this week and plans are to begin laying sod on the football field during the first week of August. The board approved a 3.13 health insurance premium increase through the district's self-funding program. The board approved several contracts, resignations, an estimate for installing graphics in the high school gym.

Herbert 'Rocky' Friend

Herbert Leo "Rocky" Friend, Jr., 88, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village, Hastings, Neb. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Thursday, July 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Evangelical Free Church, Hastings. A private family burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be give to Evangelical Free Church or Hastings YMCA. Herbert was the brother of Richard Friend of Bloomfield.

James Bailey

James E. Bailey, 86, of rural Floris died Sunday, July 16, at his home. In accord with his wishes, his body has been cremated and no services are planned. Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice and mailed to the family at 210 Church Street, Eldon, IA 52554. Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua is assisting the family.

Cheryl Fleming

Cheryl Fleming, 65, of Pulaski passed away July 13, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family and friends. As were Cheryl's wishes, her body has been cremated. Celebration of Life Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the Wagler Funeral Home with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions in her honor may be directed to the family.
