Hospital closes OB unit

The Davis County Hospital announced this week that the facility’s OB unit was closed last week following the birth of a son to Desiree and Cody Heckart of Ottumwa.

The hospital has provided OB services to the community for the past 64 years but closed the unit after hospital officials and board members determined they could no longer adequately staff the department.

This is the first time since the hospital opened 64 years ago that the facility has not offered OB services to patients.

Council discusses streetscape program

The Bloomfield City Council learned Thursday night that design work on the streetscape program should be complete by the spring of 2015. Council members learned that streets around the square would be narrowed and sidewalk space increased by up to four feet. An early projection on the cost of the project is $5.5 million.

The council approved the first reading of an ordinance calling for no parking on Franklin Street. The council approved set a date for a public hearing on Oct. 16 to discuss water revenue capital loan notes.

The council also discussed the possibility of closing Locust Street in front of the high school during the band festival on Oct. 4. No final decision was made because of the unknowns surrounding the street construction progress.

More concrete to be poured Monday on Franklin Street

Street construction crews will be pouring concrete starting Monday on the section of Franklin Street between Hillcrest and Brown Streets in Bloomfield. Crews will also be going back to the east end and pouring concrete for the storm sewer intakes to finish up the east end of the street.

Construction crews will also put down gravel and work on the sub-drainage structure near the square early next week to prepare that area for new concrete.

DPW Ted Henderson said crews would then moved eastward continuing to work on tearing out the existing street and replacing gravel and the new sub-drainage structures.
