SIEC gives back through Community Support Fund

Southern Iowa Electric Cooperative announced this week that it has given back more than $11,700 to the community during its first year of a Community Support Fund Program.

The program gives employees the choice of donating to the community support fund program through a “paid time off Leave” program. Employees may also volunteer to serve on committees and learn about community needs.

Marshall dies in accident

Mariah N. Marshall, 17, of Bloomfield was killed early Saturday morning when a pickup truck she was riding in was involved in an accident on 160th Street northeast of Bloomfield. The Iowa State Patrol released the accident report Saturday afternoon.

The accident occurred at 1:19 a.m. Saturday morning on 160th Street. The Iowa State Patrol’s report stated that a 2003 Ford pickup driven by Rocky D. Lee, 19, of Floris was eastbound on 160th Street and traveling at an excessive rate of speed. The vehicle crested a hill causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The truck entered the north ditch and began to roll. The vehicle also crossed a creek and came to rest in an upright position after crossing the creek.

Three individuals were ejected from the vehicle. Marshall died as a result of her injuries. Amanda J. Carr, 16, was transported to the Davis County Hospital as a result of injuries she sustained as a passenger in the vehicle. Lee was also transported to the Davis County Hospital as a result of his injuries.

Two other passengers, Hunter S. Collins of Blakesburg, 20, and Austin T. Ridgeway, 19, of Lancaster, Mo., were taken by helicopter to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City as a result of their injuries.

Iowa State Patrol officers report the accident is still under investigation and that charges are pending as a result of the crash.

Jail open house is success

Davis County Sheriff Dave Davis and Chief Deputy Josh O’Dell were pleased Saturday with an open house they held to show residents the condition of the current jail facility. Approximately 50 people showed up to take the tour and see the conditions of the jail and law center facilities.

Future open houses are being planned for the facility so that others can come get a look at the deteriorated facilities and learn the reasons why the county is being pushed by state jail inspectors toward building a new facility.
