Kerbe Howk, 16, of Bloomfield was injured Saturday afternoon in an auto accident on Peach Avenue in Davis County. The accident happened near the Locust Grove Church. The accident was reported at 1:15 p.m. A report by the Iowa State Patrol shows Howk was southbound on Peach Avenue and rear-ended a tractor and manure wagon. The tractor and manure wagon drug Howk’s vehicle for a short distance before coming to a stop. Howk suffered injuries in the crash and was taken to the Davis County Hospital and later taken by helicopter to another facility for treatment. The Davis County Sheriffs Department, Bloomfield Police Department, and Davis County EMS assisted with the accident.
Bloomfield Firefighters recently underwent training with new grain bin rescue equipment. The department learned techniques that will safely extract someone from being trapped. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Wagler Funeral Home for Dennis Birchmier, who died Aug. 26. Burial with military rites will be at the Troy Cemetery. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Monday with a Christian Wake Service at 6 p.m. following by visitation until 8 p.m. Memorials have been established to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and Hospice of Wapello and Davis Counties.
The Lady Mustang volleyball team went 2-4 in the Bondurant-Farrar Tournament on Saturday. Davis County scored a 2-0 win over Des Moines Christian and a 2-1 win over Perry but suffered 2-0 losses to Waverley-Shell Rock, Gilbert, Woodward-Granger and North Polk. Davis County travels to Centerville Tuesday night. The freshman and junior varsity matches begin at 5:30 p.m. The varsity match will follow.
The Mustang football team suffered a 40-8 loss to Fairfield last Friday night. Davis County will spend this week preparing for its first home game of the season. Davis County will host Chariton on Friday night Sept. 4.
