Council agreeds to construct frontage road

The Bloomfield City Council agreed to hire French Reneker and Associates to begin design work on a frontage road for the new Davis County Law Enforcement Center. Construction Manager John Hansen said the road would be needed by November. Hansen said plans are to have the site prepared, rock put down and footings poured for the building this fall. Preliminary plans are to have a rock road with the possibility of paving it in the future.

Supervisors to meet Tuesday

The Davis County Board of Supervisors will meet at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning due to the Labor Day holiday. The board will meet with secondary roads at 9 a.m. to discuss gravel invoices for the fairgrounds. and to sign a utility permit for Citizens Mutual. The board will discuss revisions to a regional 28E agreement and courthouse gun security. The board will also meet with John Hansen regarding progress on the new jail project and to consider an amendment to the architectural contract. The board will hold a closed session to discuss a land purchase.

Howk injured in accident

Kerbe Howk, 16, of Bloomfield was injured Saturday afternoon in an auto accident on Peach Avenue in Davis County. The accident happened near the Locust Grove Church. The accident was reported at 1:15 p.m. A report by the Iowa State Patrol shows Howk was southbound on Peach Avenue and rear-ended a tractor and manure wagon. The tractor and manure wagon drug Howk’s vehicle for a short distance before coming to a stop. Howk suffered injuries in the crash and was taken to the Davis County Hospital and later taken by helicopter to another facility for treatment. The Davis County Sheriffs Department, Bloomfield Police Department, and Davis County EMS assisted with the accident.

Tryouts begin Tuesday for 'The Wedding Singer'

Tryouts for the Davis County Players production of The Wedding Singer will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Iowa Theatre. Auditions will begin at 7:30 p.m. The musical comedy will be performed Nov. 12-15. High school age students and adults are encouraged to audition for the parts and chorus.

Williams setenced in sex abuse case

Wyatt Williams of rural Bloomfield was sentenced last Friday in a sex abuse case involving social media. Williams entered a written plea of guilty in his case. Williams received a two-year suspended prison sentence and was given two-years probation. He was also ordered to register wit the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. Williams was also ordered to pay all court costs and fines in the case.

School election, bond issue are top story

The school election is less than a week away. Davis County voters will be asked to decide the fate of a $9.6 million bond issue, which is proposed to upgrade facilities. Doug Dixon, Nancy Hougland, Ken Wuthrich are up for re-election as well. Wuthrich will see competition from Jim Kuberski in the only contested race. Other top stories in this weeks newspaper include Jessi Schramm is the new herd manager at Jo-Ed Dairy in Western Davis County. Several residents attended a public meeting to learn more about the proposed school bond issue. In sports, read about the first football and volleyball contests of the season.

City Council to meet Thursday night

The Bloomfield City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday night. the council will consider job descriptions for water distribution operator and a waste water operator positions. They will consider a payment to Shane Poe Construction for water main replacement work and will discuss change order for the same project. The council will consider an internet upgrade, expansion of an IT contract, approve construction of a frontage road, and consider business lighting upgrades and a cap on commercial lighting and custom rebate incentives. In other action, the council will discuss the alley at 304 South Madison, discuss closing streets for the fall festival, an employee wellness program and a salary increase for the Mutchler Community Center director.

Mustangs host Chariton Thursday night

The Mustang football team faces Chariton Friday night in the final non-district game before Class 2A District 7 action begins next week. Friday night’s games begin at 4:45 p.m. with the freshman game. The varsity game begins at 7:30 p.m.

Hougland, Lady Mustangs win Wayne Invitational

Zach Hoagland ran with a time of 14:01 Thursday night to win the Wayne Invitational on his first outing of the 2015 season. He led Davis County to a third place team finish in the race. Doug Turner finished fifth. In the girls race, Madeline Nelson was the top runner with a time of 19:41 and a fifth place finish. Kayleigh Tharp finished 14th. Davis County won the team race with 88 points.
