Thanksgiving thoughts from students is top story

Third and fourth grade students from the Davis County Elementary School spent a few minutes Friday discussing the Thanksgiving holiday. Students talked about what Thanksgiving means to them and other thoughts about what they are thankful for during this holiday. Other top stories include the Davis County Schools hosted a discussion with Indian Hills Community College and others to discuss workforce training. The Bloomfield City Council will use leftover Franklin Street funds to construct an extension to Anderson Street. In sports, the winter sports preview appears in this weeks edition. Stories about all seven of the South Central Conference winter sports teams are included.

Council to meet Thursday night

The Bloomfield City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday night. The council will host a public hearing to discuss issuing capital loan notes not to exceed $400,000 for the construction of Anderson Street. The council will discuss union employee job positions, an energy conservation management program, an urban renewal report, the annual TIF certification and will host a public hearing to amend city ordinances to address qualifications for the trustees of the library board. The council will also discuss an employee benefit systems, claims administrator, renewal of life and disability insurance, liquor licenses, and schooling for employees.

Church conducts toy drive

The Bloomfield United Methodist Church is accepting gently used toys, books and kids clothes for ages 0-13 to help families this Christmas season. Toys will be accepted at the church between Nov. 29-Dec. 3.

Revolving loan funds become avaialble for businesses

Pathfinders Resource Conservation and Development announced recently that revolving loan funds are available for qualifying small businesses in Davis County and other southeast Iowa communities. Loans are given for the creation retention, and expansion of small business. Business owners interested in more information should call 641-472-6177.

Council approves funds for street project

The Bloomfield City Council agreed Thursday night to use $400,000 in leftover funds from the Franklin Street project to build an extension to Anderson Street. The council approved an energy conservation management program for city buildings. They approved the urban renewal report and TIF certifications forth the year. The council also approved insurance renewals

Mailed absentee ballot requests due Wednesday

Voters have until Wednesday to request an absentee ballot by mail for the city council runoff election. The request must be made no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday. Forms are available from the Davis County Auditor’s office or on the auditor’s webpage at Absentee ballots must be postmarked prior to midnight on Nov. 30 or can be hand delivered to the Davis County Auditor’s office before the polls close at 8 p.m. on election day, Dec. 1

School district to observe Thanksgiving holiday

Tuesday will be the final day of classes for students and staff in the Davis County Schools this week. The school district will observe the Thanksgiving holiday beginning Wednesday and will not have classes Wednesday through Friday. Normal classes will resume on Monday, Nov. 30

Council to meet Tuesday night

The Bloomfield City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night in a special meeting. The council will consider a resolution making award of construction contract for the water tower to be built at the Bloomfield Water Plant. The council will discuss energy efficiency priorities, budget priorities, purchasing a new generator and advertising for an engine retrofit. The council will consider recommendation for interconnection standards, hiring a police secretary and liquor licenses.

Main Street honors volunteers

Bloomfield Main Street honored two volunteers for their work over the past year. Chris Ball was recognized as the 2015 Bloomfield Main Street Volunteer of the Year. Ball’s son Simon was also recognized as the Teen Volunteer of the Year for his service as a youth volunteer.

Law enforcement to begin sTEP Wave

The Bloomfield Police Department and the Davis County Sheriffs Department will take part in a sTEP Wave program beginning Wednesday and running through Nov. 30. The program allows law enforcement departments reimbursement for extra patrol hours, which will take place over the next several days. Officers will be looking for seatbelt, OWI, speeding and many other traffic violations during the sTEP Wave.

Kincart named to INA All-State football team

Davis County High School senior Ben Kincart was honored by the Iowa Newspaper Association as a first team INA All-State football player. Concert was selected to the Class 2A first team as a defensive lineman. Teams were picked last Sunday, Nov. 22 by INA sportswriters from across the state.
