Several honored at Drakesville Reunion

Robert Leyda, 85, was given a rocking chair Friday night for being the oldest soldier present at the Drakesville Reunion. Betty Spilman, 89, was presented with a chair Saturday night for being the oldest Settler present. Liberty Burton was named Drakesville Reunion Queen with Allison Beam chosen as first runner-up and Elle Chickering as second runner-up. Harlan and Karen Rudd were honored as parade grand marshals.

Public to learn about school updates Tuesday night

The School Improvement Committee will be hosting a public information meeting on proposed updates to school athletic and music facilities Tuesday evening. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the high school commons. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about the need for updates, proposed plans, and finances for the project. The bond issue for the updates is set for Sept. 8.

Organization needed to head up Christmas lighting

In a letter to the editor in this weeks Bloomfield Democrat, Main Street Director Lyn Davidson calls for volunteer organizations to step up and take over the Courtyard Christmas lighting project. Due to life circumstances, Main Street committee members are no longer able to continue this project. Those willing to help should contact the Main Street office at 664-2309.

School supply fair Saturday

A free school supply fair is being held at the Bloomfield Christian Church from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday. The event is sponsored by several churches for families who need assistance with school supplies for their children.

Dennis R. Pence, 65, of Ottumwa died Aug. 1 at Hospice House in Ottumwa after a courageous battle with ALS. Graveside services and burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ottumwa Cemetery with Rev. Aaron Swaim officiating. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 5:30 -8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease) Association or Hospice serving Wapello and Davis Counties, 927 Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, IA 52501.
