Leon Wilkinson of Bloomfield was honored as the honorary grand marshal of the Fort Bloomfield Rodeo Parade Saturday afternoon in Bloomfield. The parade and rodeo ended a three-day run by the Fort Bloomfield Rodeo in which hundreds of contestants were in the community to compete in several rodeo events.
Disaster relief available from flood and tornado damage
Governor Terry Branstad, has issued a proclamation of disaster emergency for Davis County in response to the tornado and severe weather that hit the county last month. The proclamation activates the Iowa Individual Assistance Program for the county. Grants of $5,000 for households with up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level or a maximum income of $40,180 for a family of three are eligible to apply for the grants.
Robert John (Bob) Weaklen, 61, of Bloomfield, passed away July 1, 2015 at the Davis County Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, at the Wagler Funeral Home with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 2-4 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Davis County A-Club and the Heartland Humane Society.
The Mustang baseball team officially beat Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 5-2 Sunday afternoon in a game played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Mo., That was the score at the end of the seven inning high school regulation game. The two teams were allowed to play for nine innings or two and a half hours. The game went into the eighth inning where Davis County aded eight more runs and a score of 13-2 when they walked off the field. Davis County returns to action Monday night with a game at Cardinal. Action begins at 5:30 p.m. with the junior varsity game. Anyone traveling to the game will need to go through Ottumwa and get to the Cardinal School from the north. The Eldon Bridge over the Des Moines River is closed for repairs.
