Democrat wins awards

The Bloomfield Democrat won 16 awards last weekend at the Iowa Newspaper Association Convention. The newspaper was recognized for news and editorial writing, photography and also won several advertising awards including being named the newspaper with the best in class advertising. The newspaper also finished second in general excellence. Other top stories include the Bloomfield City Council voted to allow mobile food vendors to run businesses inside the city limits. Karly Good received her Ph.D. from Iowa State University. Sara Lawson was named a National Merit Scholarship finalist. School board to discuss capital projects plan Wednesday

The Davis County School Board will hold a special meeting Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in the board room. The board will spend time discussing a five-year capital projects plan.

Clinton, Trump win DC Caucus vote

Preliminary figures suggest that close to 800 Davis County residents participate in the Iowa Caucus Monday night in Bloomfield. The Democrats had close to 300 people caucusing while the republicans had more than 530 people attend its caucus. The democrats generated 58 percent support for Hillary Clinton as she won the county support. Republicans supported Donald trump with 38.6 percent of the vote.

Iowa Caucus is top story

Wednesdays Bloomfield Democrat features results from Monday night’s Iowa Caucus. Davis County Democrat put the majority of their support behind Hillary Clinton while the Republicans chose Donald Trump as their favorite to win the 2016 Presidential Election. More than 800 Davis County residents took part in the caucus with even more who attended just to observe the process. Other top stories include a citizens committee has agreed upon ballot language and has approved a proposed facilities bond issue for the Davis County School District. Cecil Reed has taken on the responsibility of running her own business in Davis County at the age of 23. In sports read about the girls and boys basketball teams who each picked up wins last week.

Democrat wins awards at INA Convention

The Bloomfield Democrat won second place in general excellence in its class at the Iowa Newspaper Associations annual awards banquet last Friday night. The newspaper staff won several awards including best sports section, first place; best news feature, first place and third place; best personality feature, second place; excellence in editorial writing, second and third place; master columnist, second place and best news photo, first place. The newspaper also won several advertising awards including best ad featuring transportation, second place; best advertising special section, first place; best ad featuring service or merchandise, first place; best ad promoting an event, first place and best of class advertising, first place.

Mutchler Commission to meet Monday afternoon

The Mutchler Community Center will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. The Commission will hear reports from the treasurer and director and will discuss bills and other issues facing the center at this time.

Hospital buys Spark's building

Davis County Hospital CEO Kirby Johnson announced Monday that the hospitals board of directors voted late last week to purchase the Sparks Medical Clinic building located just south of the hospital. Johnson said no long term plans have been determined for use of the building. Johnson did state that the use of the new building has yet to be determined.

Teresa Joy "Terri" Howe

Teresa Joy "Terri" Howe, 57, of Bloomfield died Feb. 8, 2016 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bloomfield Tabernacle Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Shipley officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at the IOOF Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service with the family present to greet friends. A memorial has been established to her family. Mustangs lose overtime heart breaker

The Mustang boys suffered an 80-65 loss to Fort Madison Tuesday night in overtime. The Mustangs trailed almost the entire game and outscored Fort Madison 11-4 in the final five minutes of regulation. A three-pointer from Bryce Vinyard at the end of regulation tied the game at 61-61. The Mustang offense couldn’t get shots to fall in the overtime period. Vinyard led the offense with 24 points.

Lady Mustangs beat Cardinal, lose to Fort Madison

The Lady Mustang basketball team beat Cardinal Monday night 50-38 before suffering a 68-34 loss to Fort Madison Tuesday night. Michelle Allen led the scoring with 21 points against Cardinal while scoring 13 in Tuesday nights loss. Davis County will spend the rest of the week preparing for a game Saturday night at Donnellson against Central Lee. That will be the opening round game of the Class 3A Region 6 Tournament. Action begins at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
