Absentee voting numbers increasing

Davis County Auditor Linda Humphrey announced this week that absentee voting activity is high as we reach the end of the 2016 election season. Humphrey reported that 869 Davis County voters have requested absentee ballots and of those 609 have already been returned. The 2016 General Election will take place Nov. 8.

New PTO hosts Haunted Halls Fun Night

The recently formed DC Middle School PTO is hosting the Haunted Halls of DCMS Family Fun Night Thursday, Oct. 27, 5-7 p.m. at the Middle School. There will be many activities for families in addition to a meal.

Council approves bid to pave Anderson Street

The City Council last night approved a bid of $61,777 from Jones Contracting of West Point to pave Anderson Street leading to the new jail. The council also approved expenses for moving the contents of the Bloomfield Public Library to the Old School Social Center during library construction.  Library officials are asking for volunteers to help with the move to reduce expenses. The Bloomfield Democrat will detail other action taken in next week's newspaper.

Students observing Red Ribbon Week

Davis County High School students in the Students Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol (SODA) program have been working hard this week to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Students tied red ribbons around threes and light poles in the Davis County Courtyard and have adorned school property with the ribbons as well. The group is also meeting with elementary students and conducting other activities throughout the week.

Cindy Lou Strawhacker, 63, of Bloomfield died Oct. 26, 2016 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Wagler Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 2-4 p.m. Cremation will follow the visitation and no service is planned.

Leo Long

Leo Long, 93, of Burlington died Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at Burlington Care Center. Visitation is set for 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Lunning Chapel in Burlington.The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Lunning Chapel  with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Dave Roever Foundation.

Lady Mustangs beat Central Lee

The Lady Mustang volleyball team scored a 3-2 win over Central Lee Tuesday night. Davis County won the opening set 25-17. Central Lee won the second and third sets by scores of 27-25 and 28-2. Davis County bounced back for wins of 25-15 and 15-7 in the final two sets. Davis County will face Mount Vernon in the Class 3A Region 8 Championship game on Oct. 31. The match will be played in Washington at 7 p.m. Mount Vernon beat Solon and Williamsburg to advance. The winner of this match will earn a berth in the 2016 Iowa State Volleyball Tournament.
