Council approves bid to pave Anderson Street

The City Council last night approved a bid of $61,777 from Jones Contracting of West Point to pave Anderson Street leading to the new jail. The council also approved expenses for moving the contents of the Bloomfield Public Library to the Old School Social Center during library construction.  Library officials are asking for volunteers to help with the move to reduce expenses. The Bloomfield Democrat will detail other action taken in next week's newspaper.

Supervisors to meet Monday

The Davis County Board of Supervisors will meet at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning. The board will meet with Custodian Randy Norman at 8:50 a.m. and with secondary roads at 9 a.m. The board will discuss fuel payments to secondary roads, consider an amendment to a watershed improvement project, meet with Eileen Taylor concerning a grant opportunity and meet with Megan Clyman regarding the county wellness program.

School enrollment is top story

School enrollment at the Davis County Schools continues to rise. Superintendent Dan Maeder reported to the board Monday night that enrollment is up compared to last year and that open enrollment figures continue to favor students coming into the district compared to students going elsewhere for education services. Wednesdays Bloomfield Democrat features a story about the enrollment. Other top stories include arrests have been made in a burglary and drug related case investigated earlier this month. State and local officials met last week to discuss plans for Bloomfields future. In sports, read about the successes of the Mustang sports teams over the past week.

Choir concert set for Thursday

The Davis County Middle School and High School Choirs will present a concert Thursday night at the Davis County Middle School. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in the middle school gymnasium.

Trick-or-Treat space available for organizations

Davis County groups or organizations that want to offer Halloween treats on the square between 5:30 and 7 p.m. Oct. 31 should contact Lyn Davidson at the Main Street office, 664-2309, for assistance in locating available space. The event also involves a costume contest for businesspersons distributing treats. The event is sponsored by Main Streets Image Committee.

Campaign signs missing

At least 20 Trump signs and 4 Hillary yard signs were reported stolen or vandalized Wednesday morning. Police Chief Shawn Armstrong says misdemeanor charges could be filed in such instances for theft, vandalism, and trespassing. The actions also violate the property owners freedom of speech. Armstrong said: It would be pretty silly to risk a criminal record for such mischief.

Raymond Fort

Raymond Laverne Fort, 78, of rural Bloomfield passed away Oct. 19, 2016 at Hospice House in Ottumwa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Wagler Funeral Home with the Rev. John D. Boatman and the Rev. Tim Frasher officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Baseball/Softball scoreboards

Boys 10th., Girls 12th. in cross country districts

The Mustang boys cross country team finished 10th. Thursday in the Class 2A District Cross Country Meet. The boys scored 227 team points. Doug Turner finished 16th. to lead the boys. The girls finished 12th with 313 team points. Sophie Spargur was 54th. to lead the team.

Mustangs to face Albia Friday night

The Mustang football team will end its 2016 season Friday night with  game at Albia. Action begins at 7:30 p.m. Both Albia and Davis County are 1-5 in Class 2A District 6 play. Davis County is currently 2-6 while Albia is 1-7 after eight games.

Cross country teams to run in district race Thursday

The Davis County cross country teams travel to Pella Thursday for the Class 2A District Cross Country Meet. Action begins at 3 p.m. with the girls' race. The boys' race will follow. The start time was set at 3 p.m. because Class 3A district races are also being run on the same course that afternoon. The races will be held on the Central College Cross Country Course, which is located on the west side of the Central College campus in Pella.
