Supervisors to meet Monday

The Davis County Board of Supervisors will meet Monday at 8:30 a.m. The board will consider a resolution to revise the county five-year plan, and discuss a possible temporary engineer sharing agreement with Van Buren County. The board will meet with Mike Johnson regarding a position title change and salary increase for one employee. They will meet with Jane Harris regarding mental health issues. They will consider health insurance changes, a Davis Center fireworks display, a temporary loan repayment, approve the 2016-17 levy sheet, compensation board representatives, discuss the courthouse custodial position and meet with Midwest Construction Consultants regarding the new Davis County Jail.

Children's play to begin Friday night

The Davis County Childrens Theater production of Stories under the Big Top will be held Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. each night. Performances begin at 7 p.m. at the Iowa Theatre.

School board approves insurance renewal

The Davis County School Board approved an insurance renewal Monday night that will cost the district $163,059. Wayne Van Mersbergen of Van Mersbergen Insurance presented the district’s insurance renewal during the board’s monthly meeting and told the board that the premium had gone down from previous years. Van Mersbergen told the board that claims history and worker’s compensation claims both dropped over the past year, leading to the reduction in premium costs. The board also approved the purchase of a new bus. and the purchase of lighting fixtures to complete an LED lighting installation at the middle school and elementary school buildings.

Huggins is top story

Stan Huggins of Bloomfield recently retired as a teacher and coach from the Davis County School District. Huggins spent his life teaching, coaching many sports and helping to motivate students to be better in the classroom and beyond. Wednesdays Bloomfield Democrat features a story about Huggins and his career. Other top stories include The Bloomfield City Council accepted a CAT Grant. Lake Wapello Campground renovations are nearly complete. A special section is included in this weeks edition to highlight Hairy Nation Days. In sports read about past weeks games for the Mustang baseball and softball teams.

Airport receives FAA grant

The Bloomfield Municipal Airport will receive a $49,500 grant from the U. S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration program. Funds will be used to conduct an environmental assessment to evaluate any potential environmental impacts related to land acquisition and Wetlands Migration. The study will help determine the ability for the airport to grow and further develop in future years.

Hairy Nation Quilt display is Friday

Activities for Hairy Nation Days begin Friday with a quilt display tour that will see quilting displays featured in business windows on the north, west and south sides of the square. Activities continue Saturday and Sunday in Bloomfield as well.

Hospital board to meet again next week

The Davis County Hospital Board did not have a quorum of members for its meeting earlier this week. Due to that, the board could not conduct any business during its meeting. As a result, the meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, June 28 at 12:15 p.m.

Denzyl Harbour

Denzyl Harbour, 94, of Bloomfield died May 30 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Graveside services with the scattering of the cremated remains will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 28 at the Harbour Cemetery in Davis County with Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Military rites will be performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion. A memorial has been established to the Davis County Historical Society. Wagler Funeral home is assisting the family and online condolences may be directed too www.waglerfuneralhome.com.

Baseball/Softball scoreboards

Baseball beats Chariton in SCC play

The Mustang baseball team handed Chariton a 3-1 loss in South Central Conference action Thursday night. Bryce Vinyard and Caleb Cowls led the offense with two hits each. The Mustangs host Keokuk in non-conference action Friday night. The junior varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m. The varsity game will follow.

Softball team rallies to beat Chariton

The Lady Mustang softball team erased a 12-2 deficit Thursday night by scoring 12 runs to beat Chariton 14-13 . Davis County trailed 12-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning but rallied for eight runs. they added four more in the sixth to take the lead. Shelby Clark had three hits to lead the offense. Davis County returns to action Friday night with a game at Moulton-Udell. Action begins at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity game. The varsity game will follow.
