Four Mustangs named to all-district team

Four Mustang baseball players were named to the Class 2A Southeast Iowa All-District Team. The teams were released by the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association on July 23.

Calvin Mathews, Coleton Mathews, Zach Fligg and Josh Martsching were all named to the first team.

Sophomore Calvin Mathews was one of four pitchers named to the team. Senior Coleton Mathews was selected as a second baseman. Fligg was one of four outfielders selected to the team. Martsching was selected as a utility player.

Mustangs beat PCM 2-1, face Kuemper Catholic Thursday

The Mustang baseball team beat PCM 2-1 Monday night in the opening round of the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament.

The Mustangs won the game on a dropped fly ball in right field in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With the scored tied 1-1, Davis County came to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Walks to Kyle Graves and Josey Garmon set the wheels in motion for the Mustang win. Caleb Rook popped up a bunt for the first out of the inning. Josh Martsching tried to bunt for a base hit. Martsching was thrown out, but pinch runner Park Mikels and Josey Garmon moved into scoring position. Zach Fligg drew a walk loading the bases for Coleton Mathews.

With two outs, Mathews hit a fly ball to right field. The right fielder struggled to get to the ball, narrowly missing the catch at his shoe tops. Mikels scored from third, giving Davis County the win.

Davis County advances to Thursday night’s semi-final round against Kuemper Catholic of Carroll. Kuemper Catholic beat Cherokee 3-0 Monday night.
