Bloomfield has a new business on the south side of the square, located at 111 E. Franklin St.
Amanda Miller of Milton, and Dorothy Pearson of Pulaski, opened A&D Bargains on Nov. 26, 2022. Friends for ten plus years, both ladies were stay-at-home moms who enjoyed buying pallets of miscellaneous items. “It was fun being surprised by what was in them. We enjoyed it, so we thought we should try to make money doing it,” said Miller.
They purchase pallets from websites or from retailers within driving distance. The pallets contain unknown, new items which they price and sell in the store. They have a Facebook page they update with new arrivals as well as an alternate “garage sale” style page for used items.
One of the most interesting things they obtained was a fully functional child’s piano. Pearson reported the oddest thing being an urn for pets (pet not included) and an “adult” item. “Sometimes you get burned though. We drove to Waterloo and ended up with a pallet that was 90% face masks,” Pearson explained.
The store is open from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Mon.-Fri., and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
They chose Bloomfield because there is a larger customer base. A building on the square was a good fit because it gave them enough room to store the quantity of merchandise they have.
When asked about their experience starting a business, they relayed that the biggest challenge was getting a sign that met the guidelines of the Bloomfield Historical Preservation Commission.
