Bank building

The east wall of the former Exchange Bank building is deteriorating. DPW Richard Wilcox says he hopes to avoid a “repeat performance of 112 and 113 South Madison.”

DPW Richard Wilcox said last week the City of Bloomfield has started proceedings to enforce Chapter 145 in the City’s Code of Ordinances regarding dangerous buildings in reference to the east exterior wall of the old Exchange Bank (Diamondz Pizza) building at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Highway 63.

“The city attorney is working on this,” Wilcox said.

Chapter 145 states the city’s code enforcement officer shall give the owner of the building written notice of the defects.  The owner will be given a specified amount of time to commence repairs or demolish or remove the building.

The owner of the building has the option of requesting a hearing before the city council at which time the owner may appear and show cause why the nuisance should not be abated.

“We hope to avoid a repeat performance of 112 and 113 South Madison Street,” Wilcox said, referring to the collapsing façade, which was partially removed in March.
