The Bloomfield Fire Department was paged to Route 63 Quick Stop for a fuel spill last week that allowed approximately 10 gallons of gasoline to run down the station’s driveway and into the parking lot in front of Brothers Market.
Fire Chief Jeff McClure was the first on the scene and said he estimated approximately a gallon of gasoline ran into the storm sewer before he could build a dyke between the spill and the drain.
The department responded by soaking up the spill with Oil Dry and hazmat chemical absorbent socks. Firemen then flushed the storm sewer with Dawn detergent and about 2,500 gallons of water.
The affected areas of the parking lot were sprayed with Dawn and washed.
Firefighter Adam Bridgman said this was one of the bigger spills the department has dealt with.
McClure advised drivers to stand vigil as they fill up their vehicles to avoid accidental spills.
