Combine fire

Firefighters work to extinguish a combine fire that happened last week. The combine was a total loss. Firefighters worked to save the adjoining cornfield after the farmer managed to drive the combine away from the field into an adjoinging hayfield.

Several county fire departments were called to 29608 Jay Avenue in southwest Davis County at 12:53 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, after a combine caught fire.

Bloomfield Fire Chief Jeff McClure said the operator of the combine smelled smoke and drove the combine out of the cornfield into an adjoining hayfield. By the time the operator got out of the combine, the diesel fuel tank was on fire.

“The combine was a total loss,” McClure said. “The motor had just been repaired about a month ago. It is not known whether the fire was caused by a leak or dirt.”

The fire occurred on property owned by the Don Newcombe estate.
