Rowena M Vannoy, age 87, of Johnston, died on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at Edencrest Assisted Living Facility.
Rowena was born to Harry and Mona (Stone) McMains, May 27, 1934, in Mark. She was raised on the family farm and was very proud of the fact that she was the “only child, grandchild and great-grandchild” on both sides of the family. During her teen years, she was an active member of 4-H and showed Cheshire Sheep with her dad at the Iowa State Fair, winning many awards. Rowena graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1951.
On September 16, 1955, she was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) G. Vannoy of Milton. After a short stay in Bloomfield, they moved to Des Moines, where they began their family together. Rowena and Bob were happily married for 40 years until Bob’s death in 1996. She missed him each and every day since his death.
During her life she worked at various positions, the last being Bob’s office manager for 32 years at his State Farm Insurance Agency.
Rowena was a member of the Mark Baptist Church, Auburn Rainbow Board for 17 years, Auburn Eastern Star, and various bridge groups. Her hobbies included volunteering for her daughters’ activities, square dancing with Bob, cross stitch, and bridge.
Those left to cherish her memory include her two daughters: Rogena Funk, Johnston; Romona Meneough (John), Daytona Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Emily O’Brien (Kevin), Megan Meneough, Erin Funk (Nick Norman), and Connor Meneough (Alix Halloran) and great-granddaughter, Lucia O’Brien.
Rowena was proceeded in death by her husband Bob and her parents.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 10 a.m. at Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Rd, Des Moines. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
