As expected, our new State Senator Mariannette Miller-Meeks has announced her intention to run for the District 2 seat in the House of Representatives that will come open with the retirement of Dave Loebsack.
Losing Dave Loebsack as our representative is very unfortunate. For 14 years he has served all the people of Iowa fairly, not just the ones on top. I personally felt he was a breath of hope and sanity from right here in SE Iowa. The idea of Dave being replaced by Miller-Meeks is frustrating. For years M-M worked to get elected to some office and now she is willing to throw aside her obligation to District 41 in a run for a seat in DC. Imagine how effective she will be in the next Senate session while running for national office. On the other hand maybe that’s OK. In her first session here in Iowa she voted 100% party line, which actually makes sense when almost every bill making it to a vote was GOP sponsored. Oh, and there’s that 94% endorsement from the NRA and 0% from Iowa AFL-CIO.
There is an alternative. Rita Hart, retired teacher and lifelong family farmer, is also running for Dave’s seat. If you care about fully funded public schools, clean water in Iowa, a fair living wage and access to health care for all, then you DO have a choice.
