The Mustang track team scored its first team victory of the season on April 1 after scoring 162 points in the Van Buren Relays. Davis County battled with Cardinal and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont for that team title and used some late meet performances to edge out the other teams for the win.
Kenny Cronin continues to run well and led Davis County in this meet. Cronin won two individual events on the track and used his distance running skills to make that happen.
Cronin started with one of his best-ever performances in the 3200 meters. Cronin broke the 10-minute mark with a 9:55.25 to win the event. He finished more than 11 seconds ahead of second-place Gavin Grove of Cardinal.
Cronin then led the Mustangs on a journey around the track for the 1600 meters. This time, Cronin had teammate Mark Shirley on the track as well. Cronin pulled away from the pack early to win the event with a time of 4:43.15. Shirley finished second with a 5:15.06.
The Mustangs also found success in the 800 meters with Brody Humphrey and Drake Hamm running the race. Humphrey won the two-lap race with a time of 2:17.88. Hamm ran the race in 2:33 and finished second allowing Davis County to score 18 team points in the event.
Carson Maeder picked up his second win last week in the 110-meter high hurdles. Maeder won the race at Pella Christian and also scored a victory at Van Buren after clocking a time of 16:51. Ethan Morrissey was sixth in the race with a time of 20.86.
Maeder also finished second in the 200 meters. He clocked a time of 24.34 in that race. Clayton Smith ran the 100 meters and finished sixth for the Mustangs. He clocked a time of 12.78 in the race. Daniel Oliver finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.78.
Davis County also performed well in the relay races. The 4x100-meter relay team of Mike Amsden, Smith, Caedyn Glosser and Weston Shively finished second with a time of 50.30.
The 4x200-meter relay team of Shawn Rudd, Glosser, Shively and Amsden finished fourth overall with a time of 1:48.29.
The 4x400-meter relay team scored a victory to finish out the meet last Thursday night. The team of Carson Zeitler, Tayden Bish, Collin Batterson and Maeder won the event with a time of 3:39.72.
Batterson, Hamm, Shirley and Micha Closser won the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:23.30. Davis County also won the distance medley relay with a time of 3:55.44. Running that relay for the Mustangs were Zeitler, Maeder, Bish and Humphrey.
Davis County finished fifth in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1:45.69. Shively, Bish, Zeitler and Batterson ran that race.
Davis County also finished fourth in the shuttle hurdle relay. The team of Shawn Rudd, Morrissey, Oliver and Chad Stice clocked a time of 1:25.60 in that effort.
Closser and Morrissey tied for fifth place in the high jump. Both cleared 5-2 in the effort. Bish finished second in the long jump with a jump of 18-4 ½.
Trey Armstrong finished second in the shot put with a toss of 38-2 ½. Gavin McCall finished fourth with a toss of 37-7 ¾. McCall also finished sixth in the discus with a toss of 88-3 ½.
