The Lady Mustang softball team secured just three hits in a 3-0 loss to Knoxville on June 7. The South Central Conference game was played on Knoxville’s home field.

Ashton Madden, Macy Hill and Maddy Lawson provided the only offense for Davis County in this game. Those three girls provided the hits for Davis County in both the second and fourth innings of play.

Davis County had chances to make things happen before those hits came, but couldn’t generated the offense needed to move base runners early. Briley Lough got things started with a one-out ground ball that was mishandled by the Knoxville second base man. Walks to Shelby Motykowski and Hill loaded the bases for Davis County with two outs. An untimely ground ball hit back to the Knoxville pitcher went for an out and ended the inning.

Madden tried to spark things with a leadoff single in the top half of the second. She went to second on an error and ended up on third before a double play ball eliminated both her and Madison Dunlavy from the base paths.

Davis County didn’t have another base runner until Lawson singled up the middle in the top half of the fourth. Hill also singled up the middle and Davis County had two on with no outs. Lawson was thrown out at third on a fielder’s choice before an infield fly and a hard line drive hit by Dunlavy was caught in left field to end the inning. Davis County was unable to put another runner on base for the remaining three innings of the game.

Defensively, Davis County gave up runs in just two innings to suffer the 3-0 loss. After giving up a leadoff double in the second, Davis County shut down the Knoxville offense until the bottom half of the third inning. With two outs, three Knoxville hits led to the Panthers taking a 2-0 lead in the game.

The Panthers added another run in the fifth when a pair of one-out singles got their rally going. A third hit up the middle scored one to secure the 3-0 lead for the Panthers. They were able to make that lead hold up after shutting down any rally attempts from the Lady Mustangs.
