The Lady Mustang volleyball team finished last week with a 1-2 record in the Chariton tournament. Davis County suffered loses to Southeast Warren and North Mahaska and beat Interstate-35 in the four-team quadrangular.
Southeast Warren beat Davis County 22-20 and 21-16. In the second match, Davis County won the opening set 21-16 but suffered a 21-15 loss in the second set to to North Mahaska. Despite a hard-fought battle, Davis County lost the third set 15-11.
“We played well against Southeast Warren. They are a pretty solid team. Our chemistry was a little off at times in the second set,” said Davis County Coach Brooke Mason.
“Our match against North Mahaska was not pretty. We basically got beat by a team who rarely hit the ball. They pushed to the corners and tipped constantly, and we had a hard time adjusting to that for some reason,” said Mason.
In the final match of the day, Davis County scored a 21-8 win over Interstate-35 dominating the set in most every way. Davis County finished strong winning the second at 21-12 and gaining the 2-0 match win.
“We handled our final match of the day pretty easily,” she said.
“Briley led us with 19 kills, and Sophia was close behind with 18 kills. Our outsides have to carry a lot of the load for us. They have done a good job for us. We also had good serving performances from several players. Our top servers were Sophia Young, who was 33-34 with 11 aces, and Kara Greiner, who was 29-30 with 7 aces,” said Mason.
“Chloe was all over the court today. Her quickness to the ball has been essential to us,” Mason said. “While it wasn’t our best day of play, we are grateful for any opportunities we get this season.”
