Two late inning rallies weren’t enough to help the Mustang baseball team secure a win over Pekin on July 1. The Panthers dominated early scoring five of their seven runs in the first two innings. Pekin out-hit Davis County 8-5 in this game and took advantage of five Davis County errors to secure the win.
The Panthers started out the game with a leadoff single in the bottom half of the first inning. After getting an out with a fly ball hit to Garl Norman in center field, Davis County put the next Panther batter on base when he was struck with a pitch. An RBI single up the middle scored both base runners.
Davis County did get a bonus when Quinn Ledger tried to steal second. Caden Hill threw him out. The Panthers added one more run, however, when Kennan Winn homered over the left field fence. Pekin jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
The bottom of the Davis County lineup went quietly in the second before the Panthers struck again. A leadoff walk and a one-out single started this rally. Both runners scored on a Mustang error later in the inning.
Davis County broke free of the scoring silence with a run in the top of the third. Norman singled to reach base, but was forced out at second on a double-play ball hit by Owen Bennett. Bennett beat out the throw and later took second on a wild pitch. He scored on an RBI double to a deep center field hit by Kade Tharp.
After that, Davis County’s bats fell silent again without any chances to score. Clay Collier had a hit in the fourth inning. Logan Hale walked and both runners were left standing on the bases when the inning ended.
Davis County went down quietly in the fifth before Hill reached base to get a rally going with two outs in the sixth. Noah Zmolek reached on an error. Hale singled to right scoring Hill from second. Norman was struck with a pitch and Bennett walked. That allowed Zmolek to score from third.
Caedyn Glosser sparked a rally in the seventh to get the Mustangs going. He reached on a walk. Draven DeKraai also drew a walk before a single from Hill loaded the bases. Zmolek was struck with a pitch. That scored Glosser. DeKraai scored when Hale walked. A strikeout later killed the rally and forced Davis County to settle for the 7-5 loss.
