A three-run homer by Shelby Motykowski on July 2 helped the Lady Mustang softball team rally to beat Cardinal in non-conference action. The Lady Mustangs erased a 5-1 deficit with that home run to score a 6-5 win.

Down by four going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Davis County needed to make something happen and needed it to come in a hurry. Briley Lough got things going with a four-pitch walk to reach base. Bailea Yahnke’s one-out single put runners on first and third.

Motykowski came to the plate next and worked the Cardinal pitcher to a 2-2 count. She uncorked a huge swing on the next pitch sending it over the left field fence for a three-run homer. That brought the Lady Mustangs back to a 5-4 deficit and the rally continued.

Ashton Madden drew a walk to get a base runner back in place. Maddy Lawson reached on an error. Sydney Henderson singled and the bases were loaded for Davis County. Macy Hill’s hit to left on the next play was mishandled by the Cardinal left fielder. Davis County scored two runs on the play and walked off the field with a 6-5 win.

Cardinal jumped out to a quick start in this game scoring two runs early. A pair of one-out hits and a Davis County error led to two runs scoring in the top half of the first inning.

After retiring the first three Davis County batters, Cardinal was back at it again in the top half of the second inning. Davis County did secure two quick outs, but a hit to right and a second hit to left put runners on base for the Comets. A third hit to shallow left field loaded the bases with two outs. A costly error by the Lady Mustangs allowed Cardinal the chance to score all three base runners and gain a 5-0 lead.

Davis County answered that rally with a score of its own in the bottom half of the second inning. Madden reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice from Henderson. Madden later scored on a double from Hill that went to deep left field.

Defenses for both teams took over during the middle innings of this game. Cardinal put three runners on base in the third inning, but couldn’t get past the great play of the Lady Mustang defense. Davis County held Cardinal’s offense in check for the rest of the night.

Young reached on an error in the bottom half of the third but was left stranded. Henderson walked in the fourth inning and Davis County didn’t have another base runner until the sixth.

Madden singled to left to get Davis County going in the bottom of the sixth. Lawson’s ground ball up the middle forced Madden out at second base. Henderson drew a walk and Hill singled to load the bases. A pop up on the infield resulted in the final out, which killed the Lady mustang rally before the girls could score. Davis County redeemed themselves in the seventh as they rallied for the exciting finish and the walk-off victory.
