The Mustang baseball team let a three-run first inning slip away in a 16-6 loss to Centerville on June 15. The Mustangs had more than one chance to take control of this game, but pitching struggles late helped the Big Reds rally for the win.
The Mustangs jumped out early gaining a lead in the top half of the first inning. Noah Zmolek sparked the rally with a two-out single up the middle. He was able to advance to second and get into scoring position before Centerville could get the ball back to the infield. A Centerville error put Dalton Reeves on base and the Mustangs threatened with runners on second and third. Gavin McCall singled up the middle and Carson Maeder doubled to left, scoring Zmolek, Reeves and McCall for a 3-0 lead.
The Mustang defense shut down the Centerville offense in the bottom of the first behind the pitching of Kaleb Wagler. The Mustangs struggled to score in the top half of the second before Centerville rallied in the bottom half of that inning.
The Mustang defense struggled in the bottom half of the second inning and misplayed some balls hit by the Big Reds. Centerville added a couple of hits, sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning and rallied with five runs to take a 5-3 lead.
Davis County wasted no time battling back. In the top of the third, Zmolek singled up the middle to get things started. After taking second on a wild pitch, Zmolek later scored on an RBI hit from McCall.
Davis County rebounded defensively in the bottom of the third, keeping the Centerville offense off the bases with a routine ground ball out and a pair of strikeouts.
The Mustangs tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth. A pair of Centerville errors put both Clay Collier and Zmolek on base. Collier was able to tag up and take third on a fly ball hit to right field by Dalton Reeves. Collier scored the tying run on a wild pitch before the inning ended.
Centerville regained the lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Mason Oden reached on an error. A pair of wild pitches helped Oden round the bases and score to give Centerville a 6-5 lead.
Caden Hill helped spark the Mustangs with a one-out double in the top of the fifth as the Mustangs continued to battle. Hill advanced to third on an error and later scored when Daytona Bradley grounded out to the Centerville shortstop.
With the scored tied 6-6, the game headed into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mustangs began to struggle with their pitching and Centerville took advantage of that misfortune. Five straight walks issued to Centerville batters is how the inning began. An RBI double from Merrick Mathews dealt a devastating blow as Centerville scored several runs and kept the rally going without any outs. Two Mustang errors and three more Centerville hits led to a 10-run rally. The Big Reds ended the game in five innings with a 16-6 victory.
